Second Law of Thermodynamics for Macroscopic Mechanics Coupled to Thermodynamic Degrees of Freedom

چکیده
Starting from and only using classical Hamiltonian dynamics, we prove the maximum work principle in a system where macroscopic dynamical degrees of freedom are intrinsically coupled to microscopic degrees of freedom. Unlike in many of the standard and recent works on the second law, the macroscopic dynamics is not governed by an external action but undergoes the back reaction of the microscopic degrees of freedom. Our theorems cover such physical situations as impact between macroscopic bodies, thermodynamic machines, and molecular motors. Our work identifies and quantifies the physical limitations on the applicability of the second law for small systems. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). 82C05, 82C03, 80A10.

Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of large and small systems
Thermodynamics makes definite predictions about the thermal behavior of macroscopic systems in and out of equilibrium. For example, it provides relations between various measurable quantities such as the specific heat or compressibility of equilibrium systems, and the direction of energy flow in systems with non-uniform temperatures. Statistical mechanics aims to derive this behavior from the d...

The (well-known) statement in the title is proved for a ball reflected by a nondeformable wall. The ball is modeled as a collection of classical particles bound together by arbitrary potentials, and its internal degrees of freedom is initially in the thermal equilibrium. The wall is represented by an arbitrary potential which is translation invariant in the y and z directions. Impact between ma...
متن کاملQuantum Brownian motion, entropy and the third law of thermodynamics
While some physical disciplines such as classical mechanics and electrodynamics underwent profound changes with the birth of quantum mechanics and relativity theory the Laws of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics per se proved impressively robust over the last century. The main reason being that the formulation of statistical mechanics rests on few pillars only, such as ergodic theory, ens...
متن کاملChaos in the Thermodynamic Limit 3
We study chaos in the Hamiltonian Mean Field model (HMF), a system with many degrees of freedom in which N classical rotators are fully coupled. We review the most important results on the dynamics and the thermodynamics of the HMF, and in particular we focus on the chaotic properties. We study the Lyapunov exponents and the Kolmogorov– Sinai entropy, namely their dependence on the number of de...
متن کاملValidity of the zero-thermodynamic law in off-equilibrium coupled harmonic oscillators
In order to describe the thermodynamics of the glassy systems it has been recently introduced an extra parameter, the effective temperature which generalizes the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) to off-equilibrium systems and supposedly describes thermal fluctuations around the aging state. Using this concept we investigate the applicability of a zeroth thermodynamic law for non-equilibriu...
